Week 5

I did some research about animation on Vimeo and You tube. I found a few clips from Vimeo and I feel like sharing with everyone here. I might choose one of them for my assignment.

Week 4

It was picnic day on Monday(6th of August) and we did not have class. However, we had a make up lecture on 13th of August from 11am to 6pm. That is a long hour class ever!

We learned about chords/Triads. Chords/Triads are composed of a root, third and fifth notes. The group of three notes are played at the same time.

Our weekly exercise was to compose a tune over the chords with using other instrument. This is really interesting and I have learned something new in this lesson. At least I have a brief idea on how to compose music on my animation and I found it easy if I compose the music according to chord. I have compose about 8 bars music for task 4 and I feel happy about it. I can be a musician too! :) I forgot to print screen for my score and save as mp3 file so that I can upload them to my blog and share with everyone. I have not used blogger before and I need some time to figure out on how to upload mp3 file. The other interesting part is the Reason sofware, I have composed a 8 bars music and after it go onto Reson the midi file is just awesome.

The music piece that I have composed:

Week 3

We continue to discuss about the music theory. Jack had further elaborate about music Harmony. I learned something interesting which is Key signature. Key signature are made up of Sharp, Flat and Natural. They appear at the beginning of the music, but can also appear in other parts of the music. You can see key signature between the clef sign and the time signature.

There are a lot of key signatures:

The picture below shows the sign of Sharp, Flat and Natural.

A sharp sign means the note that is one half step higher than the natural note. A flat sign means the note that is one half step lower than the natural note. Most of the natural notes are a whole step apart. It cancels the sharp or flat and returns the note to its original pitch.

For my own understanding, sharp and flat can be remembered in backwards and forwards order. And there are also rules apply when we played the key signature. When a sharp or flat appears in a key signature, all the notes on that line and all other notes with the same letter name are to be played sharp or flat.

We also talked about music scales. There are many types of scales but we only focused on Major scale. Major scale is numbered from 1 to 8. For example, C major scale begins with a C note and ends with a C note. The same rule applies to every scales.

Week 2

Today we talked about music composition. Composition is a creation or recording of music. It is a piece of music which composed by musical notes. We have also talked about the three elements of creating music and they are Rhythm, Melody and Harmony.

Rhythm is the duration that each note is played. It has nothing to do with the highness or lowness of a note (pitch). The elements included beat, bars, time signatures and types of note length.

Melody is the sequence of noted that forms a musical phrase, like a sentence. The horizontal progression of music.

Harmony is the vertical progression of music. Notes play together to form chords.

Week 1

Hi there, My name is Xiau Sze or you can call me Chelsea. This is my blog for NMD201 New Media Intermediate Studio. I am looking forward to the unit content as this is totally different from what I have learned from last semester in the same unit(that was part 1 I think). It was my first week class about Sibelius but I have missed it. Sibelius is a very new thing to me and I still need to catch up a lot! Sibelius is a software mainly for music score writer. It is easy and simple to use for editing and printing beautiful scores especially for beginners. Although it is easy to use but I also need time to explore. Hopefully I can do it well. Good luck everyone.
